The Department of Assamese was established in 1989. Initially, Assamese language and literature were taught by guest lecturers. Mr. Ashraf Hussain joined as the first permanent lecturer in 1992. Since then, the full-fledged syllabus and curriculum of Assamese language and literature have been running successfully. At present, papers such as Assamese MIL, Elective Assamese, cultural history, comparative language and literature, and literary criticism are taught to the students. Teaching assistants also contribute to the smooth functioning of the Department.
